When the Ba'ath Party took over in 1963, their government adopted a new flag, which consisted of red, white, and black bands with 3 green stars. The flag formed the basis of the flag of the United Arab Republic, but instead of having the two stars standing for Egypt and Syria, this flag had another to symbolize Iraq's wish to join them in a new union. Syria adopted the same flag in 1963 to show support of the idea but replaced it in 1971. Iraq however, used this design until the Gulf War in 1991 when they lost the conflict.
