Iraqi dpm camo paratrooper smock
These Iraqi DPM smocks are not of British origin, but manufactured solely for the Iraqi Army in the 1980's and early 1990's. They are common bringbacks from Desert Storm by Coalition Forces. Most of them were reserved specifically for Iraqi Special Forces, Commandos, Marine Brigades, and the famed Republican Guard.

This particular Iraqi DPM smock style is directly based off the British Army DPM uniform style from the 1970's and were imported from a few different sources, one of the most prominent being "Pan East International". They were imported by Iraq in the 1980's and were extensively worn during the Iran Iraq War through Desert Storm by Iraqi Special Forces, Commandos, and the famed Republican Guard. These were quite literally worn and repaired until they fell apart, so seeing any of these past the 1990's would have been uncommon, hence why nearly all of them are Desert Storm bring backs.

Sshown above is an earlier Iraqi DPM smock style made in Romania. This type of smock was first seen in the Iran-Iraq War and it is of superior quality, something not seen in many Iraqi uniforms. It sports an exposed zipper, slanted pockets, "beaver tail" on the rear, and elastic wool cuffs. The design is a near identical copy of the British smocks from the 1940's and 1950's.

Shown above is the illusive paratrooper smock version with L'Berge tag. Originally produced for the Kuwaiti Military, the 1990 invasion of Kuwait saw large quantities of L'Berge uniforms fall into the hands of Iraqi troops which were then captured in Desert Storm. Like many smocks exported to the Middle East around this time, it copies the vintage British styles from the 1940's and 1950's with some slight differences, one being straight pockets instead of slanted. This example once had the "beaver tail" flap factory secured to the rear, but the Iraqi soldier who wore it removed it.

This is an interesting Iraqi DPM smock variant. It sports grey colored snaps and the bottom pockets are not slanted as much as the other smock types. It is also a coarser construction and has an unusually dull shade to its DPM camouflage pattern. These are common bringbacks in mint condition from the 2003 invasion, hinting that they were produced after 1991, however the HHD tag present means they were actually produced in the 1980s. Since they resemble the Romanian made examples shown earlier, it is hard to pinpoint their use in photographs. Of note is the Jihm mark on the tag that specifies this contract for the Popular Army which might explain why so many were left over after 1991.
